Roll forward in Workpaper Studio

Roll a Studio SOP forward when recurring month-end work should start from last period’s structure, resulting in a next-period workpaper ready for follow-up.

Workflow

Setup workflow

Step 1

Open the current workpaper in Studio

Open the Studio workpaper you want to carry into the next period.

Step 2

Open View SOP if the workpaper is already posted

If the current workpaper has posted journal entries, open View SOP first because Studio keeps Roll forward available from that protected state.

Step 3

Click Roll forward

Start the roll-forward action from the current Studio SOP actions rather than copying the workpaper manually.

Step 4

Choose how to seed the next period

In the roll-forward dialog, either upload next-period files or enter text instructions if you are rolling forward without files.

Step 5

Add the next-period inputs

Upload at least one file or finish the text instructions so the dialog has enough information to continue.

Step 6

Click Confirm and roll forward

Start the new child workpaper once the dialog shows the inputs you want to carry into the next period.

Step 7

Review the new child workpaper

Open the new Studio child workpaper and confirm the copied SOP, new inputs, and follow-up instructions look correct before continuing.

What roll forward is for

Roll forward helps move recurring close work into the next period without rebuilding the same SOP workflow from the beginning.

If the current workpaper already has posted journal entries, Studio keeps the current run protected while still leaving View SOP and Roll forward available for follow-up work.

FAQ

Why would I use roll forward?

Roll forward helps teams reuse prior SOP work for the next period instead of recreating the same steps from scratch.

Can I still roll forward after journal entries are posted?

Yes. Once journal entries are posted, the current workpaper stays protected, but you can still open View SOP and use Roll forward to start the next period from the existing SOP.

Limitations

Best suited for recurring close workflows

Roll forward is most useful when the next period follows a similar structure and review pattern.

Troubleshooting

The next-period setup does not look ready for roll forward.

Check that the source workflow is stable and that the next-period structure is what you expect before proceeding.
